오래고 또 오랜 옛날

바닷가 어느 왕국에

여러분이 아실지도 모를 한소녀

애너벨 리 가 살고 있었나니

그소녀는 나만 생각햇고 나만 사랑했나니

그리고 내게 사랑 받기를 원했다

그녀는 아이였고 나 또한 아이였으나

바닷가 이왕국 안에서

나와 나의 애너벨 리는

그어떤 사랑보다 깊이 사랑하였나니

그것은 하늘에 사는 천사들조차 시샘할 정도의 우리 사랑이었다

분명히 그것으로 해서 오랜 옛날

바닷가 이 왕국에

어느날 밤, 구름에서 한줄기 바람이 불어와

나의 애너벨 리를 싸늘하게 햇고

그녀의 신분 높은 친척들이 찾아와

내게서 그녀를 데려가고 말았나니

바닷가 이 왕국에 자리한

어느 무덤에 장사지낸 것이다.

천상에서 우리 절반만큼도 행복하지 못한 천사들이

그녀와 나를 시샘했던것--

아무렴 ! 그런이유로해서

(바닷가 이 왕국에서는 모두가 다 아다시피이

구름사이에서 그바람이 불어와

내 애너벨 리를 싸늘케 하여 빼앗은 것이었다.

하지만 우리 둘의 사랑은

어른들의 사랑보다 훨씬 강하였고

현명한 사람들의 사랑보다도 강했나니

그로 해서 하늘에 사는 천사들도

또한 바다 밑에 웅크리고 이있는 악마들도


내 아름다운 애너벨 리의 영혼으로부터

나의 영혼을 결코 갈라 놓을수는 없다.

달빛이 비칠 때마다 내게

아름다운 애너벨 리의 꿈을 꾸게 하고

별빛이 떠오를 때마다 내게

아름다운 애너벨 리의 눈동자를 우러르게 하노니

하여, 나는 밤새도록 내 사랑, 내 사랑

내 생명인 내 신부곁에 눕는다.

바닷가 그묘지 안에

바닷가 물결치는 그녀의 무덤곁에
